Public Consultation for Multiband Auction
The TKK consults the tender specification document for the 700/1500/2100 MHz frequency bands and also discusses individual topics in the consultation document. The consultation is expected to receive input from the market for the publication of the tender dossier in December 2019. The planned allocation of spectrum in the above-mentioned areas for 2020 may be seen as another important step for the roll-out of 5G in Austria.
Public Consultation on mm-Waves
The 26 GHz band (24.25-27.50 GHz) provides a very high bandwidth for classic mobile phone use. However, that band also has a very narrow range (typically less than 100 m) and can therefore be used in areas with high user density and in places with very high capacity requirements. The consultation expected market inputs on applications, coexistence and compatibility. Below are links to the consultation document, comments received and a summary.
First 5G auction sucessfully finished
With the early assignment of 5G frequencies in international comparison, the regulatory authority has taken an important step towards the early introduction of 5G in Austria. The allocation of spectrum in the range of 3.4 - 3.8 GHz means strengthening the factors of innovation, business location and competition. With the planned allocation of spectrum in the areas of 700 MHz, 1.5 GHz and 2.1 GHz for 2020, another essential step towards 5G in Austria will be made.
BEREC Activities
The Regulatory Authority, within the framework of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC), deals with the regulatory challenges of the introduction of 5G. The topic related with the introduction of the new mobile communications standard is "Enabling 5G and promoting innovation in network technologies". This work package is one of the five cornerstones of the BEREC Medium-Term Strategy 2018-2020 and therefore prominently represented in the current BEREC work program 2019.
The following topics with reference to 5G will be addressed this year according to the BEREC Work Program 2019.
- The impact of 5G on regulation
- Feasibility study on development of coverage information for 5G deployments
- Cyber Security of 5G networks
- Peer review process
- Common Position on infrastructure sharing
Already in 2018, a study commissioned by BEREC and carried out by DotEcon and Axxon was published, which deals with the potential changes of value chains and business models through the introduction of 5G.
