TKK launches allocation procedure for 26 GHz frequencies Press release dated 14 November 2006 With the publication of an invitation to tender in the Official Gazette of the Wiener Zeitung, Austria's Telekom-Control Commission (TKK) has launched the allocation procedure for frequencies in the 26 GHz range. A total of 21 frequency packets of various bandwidths will be auctioned off for six different regions of the country. The total of all minimum bids is EUR 1,294,000. The frequency packets are to be used for radio systems in the provision of communications services and can be used for end-customer broadband connections as well as the connection of mobile base stations. "The frequencies in the 26 GHz range are very well suited for high-speed data transfer – in particular, they will foster the development of broadband wireless access, especially the expansion of HSDPA," comments Georg Serentschy, Managing Director for Telecommunications at the Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, on the potential uses of this radio system. Two-stage allocation procedure – Auction in Q1 2007The two-stage allocation procedure will begin on February 5, 2007, once the tender submission deadline has passed. In the first step, the Telekom-Control Commission will review the applications received to ascertain whether they meet the relevant economic and technical prerequisites. In the second stage, all of the frequency packets will be auctioned off in an open, ascending, simultaneous, multiple-round procedure. The completion of the procedure can be expected in the first quarter of 2007, and the frequency allocations will remain valid until December 31, 2020.
