Re-Allocation of WLL Frequencies in Austria: RTR GmbH to Start Allocation Procedure in Fall 2001

The Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications (Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH, or RTR GmbH) is currently preparing a new procedure for the allocation of wireless local loop (WLL) frequencies in the 26 GHz range.

The regulatory authority has submitted the tender documentation to the Austrian Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology and requested permission to publish the invitation to tender (required under § 49a Par. 3 of the Austrian Telecommunications Act, or TKG), thus launching the new procedure for WLL frequency allocation. 3 to 4 frequency packages of various sizes will be auctioned off for each region.

Purpose of Use Expanded

In contrast to the award procedure concluded in February 2001, the new procedure allows for use of the frequency packages for wireless end-consumer telecommunications services as well as internal network connections, such as the linking of base stations in mobile communications systems.

Auction planned for Fall 2001

Given approval by the Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology, the allocation procedure will be carried out in the form of an auction, which is planned for Fall 2001 (after the minimum two-month tender submission period).
