New RTR Telecom Monitor: dramatic increase in smart phone tariff users

Press release dated 22 November 2011

“Smart phone tariffs are becoming increasingly popular among Austrians. By the second quarter of 2011, 33% of all households in Austria already had a combination tariff for mobile voice and data services which they used mainly for smart phones. Within one year, smart phone penetration has increased dramatically, by 22% to be precise.” With this statement Georg Serentschy, Managing Director of RTR’s Telecommunications and Postal Services Division, summarized the figures published in the new RTR Telecom Monitor. “In total there were about 4.88 million broadband subscribers in Austria during the second quarter, with 43% of the subscriptions served by fixed-line networks and 57% through mobile network access,” Serentschy added. “Smart phone tariffs usually protect users against unexpectedly high phone bills, so I expect the high level of popularity to continue.”
