TKK launches allocation procedure for 2.6 GHz frequencies Press release dated 21 April 2010 With its publication of an invitation to tender in the Official Gazette of the Wiener Zeitung, Austria's Telekom-Control Commission (TKK) has launched an allocation procedure for the 2.6 GHz frequency band. In the procedure, 14 paired frequency blocks with a bandwidth of 2 x 5 MHz each and 10 unpaired frequency blocks with a bandwidth of 1 x 5 MHz each will be allocated. The minimum bids total EUR 7.4 million. “The frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band are especially well suited for high-speed data transmission in cities and allow, apart from other technologies, for the use of LTE, the next-generation, cutting-edge mobile broadband technology,” says Georg Serentschy, Managing Director of the Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, explaining the fields of application of these frequencies. Two-stage allocation procedure: auction expected to take place in September 2010 After the expiry of the tender submission period on July 12, 2010 the two-stage allocation procedure will commence. In the first step, the Telekom-Control Commission will review the applications received to ascertain whether they meet the economic and technical prerequisites. In the second stage of the frequency allocation procedure, the frequency blocks will be auctioned off to the qualified applicants, most probably in September 2010. The frequencies awarded in this procedure will be allocated for a limited period of time ending on December 31, 2026.
